Jim Ross & The King On Ric Flair, Draft Lottery, IC Title & More

February 29, 2008

News-journal online’s Jeff Wilen recently sat down with good old Jim Ross & Jerry “The King” Lawler on Wrestlemania and upcoming events for WWE.

What are your impressions of the announce team of Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura and how they made WrestleManias 3, 4, 5 and 6 bigger and better?

JR: “I have always been a fan of both men’s work and was especially close to Monsoon, who became a mentor to me soon after I arrived in the WWE in 1993 when I was not considered a ‘popular hire.’ Monsoon always held his ground with the controversial Ventura, which made their on-air conflicts that much more entertaining back in the ’80s. Ventura could dominate a broadcast if he was allowed to but not with Gorilla. They meshed well, and ‘The Body’ still had plenty of opportunities to contribute in his own unique style. In my opinion, Monsoon’s best broadcast partner was Bobby Heenan, hands down, while Jesse probably worked best with Vince McMahon, but that’s not to say that the Gorilla/Body combo did not do an excellent job in the early days of WrestleMania.”

What are your best Wrestlemania moments?

King: “Every year, I think this is it — you’ll never be able to top this (and then we do).” I mentioned The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan. “That’s one of my all-time favorite matches (top three).”

Fans are anxiously anticipating Ric Flair’s Hall of Fame induction. Will Ric Flair literally ride Space Mountain at Disney World? Maybe we can expect a promo from there promoting his match against Shawn Michaels?

JR: “Flair will raise the bar as it relates to emotion and raw passion when he enters the WWE Hall of Fame on Saturday night March 29 in the Amway Arena in Orlando, which no fan should miss if at all possible. I have said, and I mean it sincerely, even if I was not in the WWE, I would travel on my dime to see ‘Naitch’ take his rightful place in the WWE Hall of Fame”

King: “I don’t think there’s anyone more deserving.”

It’s very likely, with Jeff Hardy in the Money in the Bank ladder match at WM 24, that the Intercontinental Championship won’t be defended at WM for the sixth consecutive year. Will this title ever mean something again, especially on the biggest stage of them all?

JR: “I think the IC Title means something now. Whether it is defended at WM 24 or not, the IC Title is the third most prestigious title in the WWE behind the WWE Title and the World’s Title. [notice the negligence on the ECW’s title] I do agree that there could be more focus surrounding the Intercontinental Title and the title could be featured much more than it is. Plus, one is assuming that Jeff Hardy will still be the IC Champion come WM 24”

Any chance we’ll see a WWE Draft after WM 24?

JR: “I assume that there is a chance, but I have heard nothing concrete about this matter. In 2008, I would rather see an influx of new, young talents make their debuts in an organized, systematic process rather than see the same established talents simply change addresses. I like the overall concept of the Draft, but I don’t know that it has to be a cut and dried, annual affair. Although it does generally garner a nice TV rating and helps rosters that have been depleted by injuries.”

Wrestlemania 24 Update 3.0

February 20, 2008

With the Wrestlemania plan changing 24/7, WrestlingMAT is back with another post on it.

Right now, as mentioned earlier, these are the confirmed matches for Mania:

Undertaker Vs Edge (World Heavyweight Championship)

John Cena Vs Triple H Vs Randy Orton (WWE Championship)

Now, the attention is set to Floyd Mayweather and The Big Show. While many speculated that this match would gain attention from the media, it looks like too much hopes were pinned. As always, Wrestlemania would be a grand daddy event for the company and external big stars would grace the event. In the past, Limp Bizkit, Motorhead, Donald Trump, Mike Tyson has generated plenty amount of interest in the product during their appearances. With Floyd already in, the management is now seeking to bring in another renowned boxer, Oscar de La Hoya. Shane Mcmahon name was also being tossed around. It would be interesting to see how things would go.

What about Flair? On the past Monday Night Raw, Shawn Michaels personally made the announcement that Ric Flair would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame at Wrestlemania 24 this year. You can expect the induction to be involved heavily in the storyline. With that said, Batista and Kennedy name has been thrown out. It looks like HBK/Flair match at Mania is set.

Following the line, JBL seems to be involved in another programme this past week on RAW. Hopefully, the writers would not made any silly changes to the grudge match between Y2J/JBL. Though I have to said, the built up sucks, but it would completely be a waste of the two months efforts made.

Jeff Hardy has agreed to put his body on the line at Money In The Bank. He has personally agreed to do this match despite his troubling health matters. Writers will be penning down the “against all odds angle” for Jeff Hardy in months to come which narrates around how he fail and try, fail and try, fail and try, and finally succeeded.

WWE is also discussing an idea to bring back Kevin Federline in a celebrity battle royal match. He would be the focus of the match and would win the entire thing. This would definitely make some media coverage from the press.

Whether you believe it or not, Vince might be playing up Hornswoggle head injury. I am getting sluggish over what to come for this angle. I don’t look forward to Finlay Vs Vince, i mean pardon me for those Irish friends but this angle just doesn’t seems matching. Inside of me, my hunch is telling me that Finlay would eventually betray Hornswoggle for a higher secrecy that will be sold in weeks to come.

Chavo Guerrero should lose the title to Punk at Mania. Thing is, where would Punk go after this? Would he faced the same fate like Lashley and get stripped off his title due to the draft lottery?

Candice Michelle is receiving really good hype up promo. So be sure for her to feud with Beth Phoenix.

Writers are having second thoughts now for ushering Matt in a return conquest with MVP.

Batista, Kane, Mick Foley, Kennedy, Shelton, Big Daddy V, Mark Henry, Umaga are all good names with feud yet to be settled. A possible solution is to throw them all into the MIB with Jeff.

Column Of The Week: My Way To The Highway

February 17, 2008

It started with a creative idea from Eric Bischoff and it evolved into a massive, high profiled match at Madison Square Garden on 2002. By far, 5 separate elimination chamber matches have torn 20 men apart. Tonight, the solid steel beams, thick vast of chain and ten tonnes of punishment will placed 12 men within its grasp. 3 brands, 2 matches, 2 winners, 1 night of glory.

Survivor Series 2002
The World Heavyweight Championship was on the line at the first Elimination Chamber. Shawn Michaels, Booker T, Rob Van Dam, Kane, Chris Jericho, and Triple H all entered the steel chamber. A sweet chin music from Michaels hailed him back to the top with thunderous applaud crowning his success.

Summerslam 2003
The second EC participants were Triple H, Chris Jericho, Goldberg, Randy Orton, Kevin Nash, and Shawn Michaels. Goldberg was the man of the match before being ambushed by Triple H & his protege of evolution.

New Year’s Revolution 2005
Edge, Batista, Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Triple H, and Randy Orton stepped into the 3rd Elimination Chamber to fight for a vacant World Heavyweight Championship. Shawn Michael was the guest referee. This match will be remembered mainly for the fans cheering for Batista to turn on his Evolution teammate Triple H.

New Year’s Revolution 2006
Kurt Angle, Kane, Shawn Michaels, Chris Masters, and Carlito stepped into the cage to fight for John Cena’s WWE Heavyweight Championship. John Cena remained the top and after the match, Edge cashed in on his Money in the Bank award and captured the gold from the weakened Cena.

December to Dismember 2006
The Big Show put his ECW Heavyweight Championship on the line in the 5th Elimination Chamber. The challengers were CM Punk, Hardcore Holly, Rob Van Dam, Test, and Bobby Lashley. This match added unique hardcore elements of steel chair, crowbar, barbed wire, baseball bat, and tables. Bobby Lashley captures the title after eliminating Test and the Big Show.

No Way Out 2008 [RAW]
RAW’s Elimination Chamber will be hyped up with three experienced wrestlers heading to the match. Shawn Michaels will be at EC for his 5th time. Triple H and Chris Jericho will be entering for the 4th time. Triple H held the highest winner record in EC with two victory. Jeff/JBL/Umaga have never stepped into the EC before. The final push has been narrowed to two names, Jeff and Triple H. Triple H vows to be the man tonight and Jeff has built considerable amount of momentum to be able cash his victory.

No Way Out 2008 [ECW/SMACKDOWN]
Pretty new entrants for this side. Only Batista entered the EC before. Undertaker/Khali/Finlay/Big Daddy V/MVP are new to this match. With Mysterio possible departure, it would be interesting to see how things would turned out. Again, it has been to narrowed down to two names, its either Undertaker or Batista. My vote would definitely be with Taker since the original plan of Edge/Taker have not been changed.

Some interesting things to note, many who had competed in the EC have surprisingly high chances of leaving the company. Of all the 20 unique men who had entered, nearly half of them have left the company in some ways. This includes Booker T, RVD, Goldberg, Kevin Nash, Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle, Chris Masters, Test & Bobby Lashley.

Since there are two EC matches in one night, be prepared for a short display of performances. (yes, booooooo~) The conservative nature of the management style have always been safe guarding its talent. Furthermore, the impending grand daddy, Wrestlemania, would require them to be around for good. So, with that said, enjoy the matches tonight! Short & Sweet.

February 14, 2008

Love itself is complicated. It get worse when you stole someone else partner. It get better if you date an ex-wife. It get controversial if you date a guy. Today, WrestlingMAT take a Valentine Day snapshot at many current WWE superstars and alumni and see how things are going in their love lives.

1/ Without this couple, there wouldn’t be a WWE. Today let’s honor the top wrestling promoters, Vince/Linda Mcmahon. The two met in church when Linda was 13 and Vince was 16. This would be their 42nd Valentine anniversary.

11/ Edge have been married on two occasions. He was originally married to Alanah Morley, Val Venis’s Sister and then allegely stole Matt’s Gf, Lita. They ended up in divorce due to public’s heavy pressure.

12/ Whether on screen or not, Matt Hardy has been a dedicated boyfriend to his 6 years relationship with Lita. After Lita’s betrayal, Matt took a long period of time to recover. He is currently seeing RAW’s Ashley Massaro.

13/ His brother, Jeff is said to be currently dating a woman that is outside of the wrestling business.

14/ With Matt and Edge departure, Lita is currently seeing Shane Morton, her Luchagors bandmate.

15/ John Morrison was in a long term relationship with Melina Perez, his former on screen manager. The pair met during auditions for Tough Enough III, although she didn’t make the show. Currently, Morrison is said to be dating someone in the Hollywood. Suit his gimmick isn’t it?

Wrestlemania 24 Update

February 11, 2008

WrestlingMAT is back with another update for the upcoming Wrestlemania.

The official theme song this year will be Snow “Hey Oh” by Red hot chilli peppers. This song won the Grammy last year, you can listen it here.

Vince has been very keen on the idea of having two faces headlining Wrestlemania, which is Triple H vs John Cena. Fans has expressed their concerns over Triple H’s troubling matters with his family. By and large, I can said, it would not affect his match at Mania.

Last year, Pop Princess, Britney Spears was actually approached to make an appearance at Mania 23. However she declined the invitation. It happened likewise for this year.

Hulk Hogan Vs Stone Cold should be unlikely to happen. Both men have personal tight schedule to follow, plus the lack of interest to do this match was also a compelling factor.

However, you can anticipate a Rock/Austin or Hogan/Austin promo to be cut at Mania this year.

Y2J/JBL and MVP/Matt Hardy match remained in the confirmation list.

Management has played down the Punk/Edge feud which means there could be a possible twist in the story. For Punk to win the title from Chavo at No Way Out is still 50-50. Writers has been getting heavy stress on who to place as Punk’s opponent at Wrestlemania if he were to win it next Sunday. Chavo remained the highest possible. Mysterio name also surfaced.

Both the writers and Vince are not keen to push Michaels for a win over Flair at Maina because of the fact that he was already an established star. They want young stars to have the moment, which means Batista or Orton remained high candidates now.

There are no much talks to change Undertaker/Edge match so it remained a high possible match. Edge/Vicki segment is likely to be put to an end as well.

The Mcmahon/Finlay/Hornswoggle angle is likely to involve the returing Big Show though words have not been confirmed.

As reported earlier, Jeff’s condition is getting worse and management has expressed their woes to put Jeff in a high profile/risk match at Mania. Therefore he is likely to just defend his I.C title. Having both Jeff/Matt to win the secondary titles of each brand is still something feasible.

As a whole, Vince has been commenting that despite a possible bad weather outbreak, the show will still go on.

Column Of The Week: Rumble Equals Champ

February 10, 2008

The Royal Rumble is a platform designed to escalate anyone into the main event spot at Wrestlemania. It is a given opportunity from the company to let stars become superstars. It has been almost 21 years since the beginning of this sporting extravaganza.

The question is, does a Rumble win equals to being a heavyweight champion? Let’s us analyze. If Vince decides to let you have the honor of winning the Rumble, it means he feels comfortable enough to market you. It means you will be use as an important tool to sell for the biggest event of the year, Wrestlemania.

In the past, that doesn’t equal to being a champion. But in recent years, it has become a more favorable position to slot you into the champion spot. Historically speaking, here are the results.

15 past Royal Rumble winners has been compared. It is concluded that a strong 70% chance of Rumble winners becoming a champ. With the last 8 years having consistent winning rate, we can conclude Cena’s chance with Randy as almost absolute victory.

The Backlash
Many of us are wondering why there is this tradition for Rumble winners to be the champ. The platform itself was set up to give a chance to face the champion at the grandest stage of em’ all. Not to walk out as a definite champion. More importantly, such tradition has killed the anticipation for the main event at Wrestlemania.

The Wrestlemania main event has been always the center of attention. It is The Beast vs The Monster, The Fire vs The Water, which makes us tear ourselves apart as to who to support. Now, it is almost definite that since Cena has won the Rumble, we are just merely waiting for a conclusion to come. Let’s picture this, you are watching a movie and you already know the ending. Such perception really burns the story into bits.

Creativity
Competition really equals to creativity in some extent for this company. If you look at the table, 2001 was the start of the monopoly of WWE and the fall of WCW. In other words, Vince no longer need to please the viewers with excitement. All he need is to please himself. As long as he see it fitting, thats the law. Fans across the globe has always been slamming wrestling creativity as one of the worse. The irony itself is that they are selling poor entertainment stories and yet we are still watching it. That’s definitely something to laugh at.

Personal Thoughts
Hopefully with TNA intense competition, it can spark some creativity juice to WWE. Major events such as Royal Rumble or Wrestlemania should be given much thoughts in the story before laying them down in black and white. In WWE, there have always been this saying “Never say Never”. I guess we can bleminshed it for now.

WrestlingMAT Speaks Out & More!

February 6, 2008

As we are ushering into a new CNY and the recent “Get You Talking Campaign” launched, WrestlingMAT sat down with our founder, Scott.TA and get him talking about the upcoming Wrestlemania 24, as well as his new publicity manager and more!

So Scott, tell us us more about yourself: I am a broadcast mass media student in Singapore. I’ve been watching wrestling ever since I was 7, and it has been almost 13 years now. I love wrestling because of its unique entertaining style; it is something so violent perceived by others but yet when you immersed with it, it’s so addictive.

What’s your views on the current wrestling business: (thinking really hard) I think we passed the prime of wrestling but we might be reaching another. WWE has been so powerful that it almost stomped any mainstream competitors. In business view, the monopoly company is sure good for itself while in our consumer view, definitely, it driven out creativity and excitement.

Alright, let’s cut down straight, why made you want to set up WrestlingMAT:
I always wanted to have a say in wrestling. My distant dream is to be a creative writer for the company and/or commentator. In Singapore, when you said that to anyone, the likely response you will get is (laughs) “Get REAL kid!”

So how far has WrestlingMAT gone: Setting up this site has been awesome. We have good responses, faithful viewers who dropped by everyday. I would like to thank them personally. I can said that setting up this site has been time consuming, most of my free time has been drained out. But then, it’s what i like no no it’s what I love to do. I remember a couple of weeks ago, I was hosptialized and WrestlingMAT have to put on hold. The only thing that was going through my mind was, damm i need to be back for them.

Was there any part of you that admire any wrestlers: When I started as a kid, Shawn Michael has been my favorite. I remember his classic ladder match and the night when his boyhood dream has came through. And came the great one, The Rock. He was simply electrifying. He was so entertaining that I hardly remember anyone who had surpassed him. Currently, my pick would be Taker. I have a lot of respect for him. It was a gradually thing that made me come to realisation that this man is not just a deadman. This man is loyal, smart and dedicated.

Now the attention, let’s talk about your new publicity manager: Well~ it is my pleasure to announce a new member to our team, his name is JH and he has been a close friend of mine. We are expanding so it’s good.

So what’s to come for WM: With JH around, we will then look at the picture and see how far we can grab audience here. Next week, we will be doing a Valentine Specials which is something i find it really interesting. Also, to celebrate the CNY, today we will be dropping a big bombshell to our viewers tonight. So be sure to come back in hours time.

Enough of WM, let’s talk about Wrestlemania: Hmm.. i don’t think this Wrestlemania would surpass some of my favorite ones. I would said things are getting monotonous. We have really great potential storylines but we are not heading there. No one actually contemplated a Batista/Cena match which is quite sad. To run JBL and Y2J for so long really burnt the anticipation in us.

What about TNA: I am not a fan of TNA yet but I love what they are doing and where they are heading. TNA Vs WWE should be coming. I am actually rooting for TNA to knock some sense in WWE.

Closing Thoughts: If you are smelllllllllllllll~what (laugh) (laugh) (laugh) Hahahaha!

Present Plans For Wrestlemania 24

February 4, 2008

The promotional poster for Wrestlemania 24 is out, you can view it here.

There are several plans that would likely to happen in this year’s Mania. Of course these opinions are mere speculations and WWE has high tendacy to change their final card 24/7 to make sure everything fits.

SO, with that said, let’s turn out attention to No Way Out. First up, Triple H is likely to win the EC and face John Cena at Wrestlemania. Even so, the 11 time world heavyweight champion have not kept his mind off. It is said that he has been bootlicking backstage so he could walk out as the 12th time champion.

There should be some angle involving McMahon/Finlay/Hornswoggle. It looks sluggish so I wouldn’t pay my attention on it.

Who will retire Ric Flair? The three likely candidates are Shawn Michaels, Batista and Randy Orton. Shawn and Flair has been legends, it would be good to hype up a legend vs legend match. Batista on the otherhand has been fond of Flair. It was Flair who taught him to be the man. An Apprentice vs Master match really sounds feasible. Lastly, with Randy off the title, the legend killer ending Flair should pull some stop.

The World Title side would end up in both ways. Writers have been frustrated with the sudden twists in many stories due to Lashley possible departure. It is likely that Taker will face Edge at Wrestlemania or Batista vs Mysterio.

The feud between Matt Hardy and MVP will resume very soon. The reason why Matt Hardy has yet to return is to wait for an appropriate time to feud with MVP. He is cleared off all injuries at the moment.

Column Of The Week: The 21st Royal Rumble

January 27, 2008

Tonight, the 30 man Royal Rumble will determine who is going to the highest spot of wrestling entertainment, the main event match with a heavyweight champion at Wrestlemaina. Over the years, superstars like Stone Cold, The Rock, Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart have took the prize. There are also great talents like Kurt Angle, Mick Foley, Chris Jericho and Kane who never had to chance a to be crowned the man. Let’s us look at some the potential winners for tonight, the 21st Royal Rumble.

Undertaker
Don’t be surprised if the Deadman wins the Rumble tonight. Management wanted to push Taker as the World Champion opponent, at Wrestlemaina. Whoever that might be, Taker/Edge could pull some stop. Undertaker has told the corporation that this could be his last few years in the company. A last strong push is well-deserved for Taker.

CM PUNK
Punk has dropped his title last Tuesday and that makes him a strong possible winner for this year, Royal Rumble. WWE.com has just removed Punk and Chavo match from the tonight event. A hunch is crawling somewhere that Punk sudden lost to Chavo is due to Lashley departure. Since Edge has been feuding with Punk lately, with Punk winning the Rumble and facing Edge at Wrestlemaina seems really feasible.

Triple H
Perhaps one of the most overrated superstar in the corporation. Triple H has used his powers to establish himself as the Game, not just to the fans but also to everyone backstage. Only his story is hype up this month, so I could say, he stands a high chance to win. He seems to be on a conquest for the heavyweight title again.

Batista
If management team were going for a safe bet that it is likely that Batista would win it and head to RAW. Raw Creative Team wanted to put him in a match against Randy Orton or Triple H. These men are protégé of the Evolution and the angle would easily lead from there. Furthermore, these men have feud since the Orton Lashback in 2004 and recent heat from Raw 15th Anniversary Show.

This year Royal Rumble should be a stick in the mud. What the creative team have done wrong was to placed too much hope on returning superstars. Cena is still on the recovery list. Lashley is going to quit. Big Show return might not be able to draw as much. RVD refused to come back YET.

It is even more annoying to learn that rising talents like Jeff Hardy, JBL, Mysterio, Y2J are involved in separate matches. Especially Jericho and Jeff who deserved to be pushed as Rumble winners instead of the potential winners.

CM Punk (Mystery Slot), Triple H, Batista and Undertaker now joins Umaga, Snitsky, Hardcore Holly, The Miz, Morrison, Hornswoggle, Foley, Kane, Noble, Finaly, Cody, Shelton Ben, Carlito, Santino, Shawn Michaels, Mark Henry, The Great Khali, Kennedy, Tommy Dreamer, Big Daddy V and Chuck Palumbo in the battle of tonight’s main event. This leaves 5 more mystery slots.

My personal support goes to Punk. Let’s see tonight show to find out!
