Jim Ross & The King On Ric Flair, Draft Lottery, IC Title & More

February 29, 2008

News-journal online’s Jeff Wilen recently sat down with good old Jim Ross & Jerry “The King” Lawler on Wrestlemania and upcoming events for WWE.

What are your impressions of the announce team of Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura and how they made WrestleManias 3, 4, 5 and 6 bigger and better?

JR: “I have always been a fan of both men’s work and was especially close to Monsoon, who became a mentor to me soon after I arrived in the WWE in 1993 when I was not considered a ‘popular hire.’ Monsoon always held his ground with the controversial Ventura, which made their on-air conflicts that much more entertaining back in the ’80s. Ventura could dominate a broadcast if he was allowed to but not with Gorilla. They meshed well, and ‘The Body’ still had plenty of opportunities to contribute in his own unique style. In my opinion, Monsoon’s best broadcast partner was Bobby Heenan, hands down, while Jesse probably worked best with Vince McMahon, but that’s not to say that the Gorilla/Body combo did not do an excellent job in the early days of WrestleMania.”

What are your best Wrestlemania moments?

King: “Every year, I think this is it — you’ll never be able to top this (and then we do).” I mentioned The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan. “That’s one of my all-time favorite matches (top three).”

Fans are anxiously anticipating Ric Flair’s Hall of Fame induction. Will Ric Flair literally ride Space Mountain at Disney World? Maybe we can expect a promo from there promoting his match against Shawn Michaels?

JR: “Flair will raise the bar as it relates to emotion and raw passion when he enters the WWE Hall of Fame on Saturday night March 29 in the Amway Arena in Orlando, which no fan should miss if at all possible. I have said, and I mean it sincerely, even if I was not in the WWE, I would travel on my dime to see ‘Naitch’ take his rightful place in the WWE Hall of Fame”

King: “I don’t think there’s anyone more deserving.”

It’s very likely, with Jeff Hardy in the Money in the Bank ladder match at WM 24, that the Intercontinental Championship won’t be defended at WM for the sixth consecutive year. Will this title ever mean something again, especially on the biggest stage of them all?

JR: “I think the IC Title means something now. Whether it is defended at WM 24 or not, the IC Title is the third most prestigious title in the WWE behind the WWE Title and the World’s Title. [notice the negligence on the ECW’s title] I do agree that there could be more focus surrounding the Intercontinental Title and the title could be featured much more than it is. Plus, one is assuming that Jeff Hardy will still be the IC Champion come WM 24”

Any chance we’ll see a WWE Draft after WM 24?

JR: “I assume that there is a chance, but I have heard nothing concrete about this matter. In 2008, I would rather see an influx of new, young talents make their debuts in an organized, systematic process rather than see the same established talents simply change addresses. I like the overall concept of the Draft, but I don’t know that it has to be a cut and dried, annual affair. Although it does generally garner a nice TV rating and helps rosters that have been depleted by injuries.”

The Rock: “I am not coming back”

February 29, 2008

According to Pr-inside.com, The Rock is fed up with the wrestling demands. Here is the press release statment by The Rock.

The 35-year-old decided to part ways with World Wrestling Entertainment and pursue a career in Hollywood after “falling in love” with acting on the set of 2001’s The Mummy Returns. But the Scorpion King star insists he is still bombarded with queries as to when The Rock will return to the ring.

He says, “I probably wouldn’t get asked that question if I had made a bigger splash about my retirement. But I retired quietly five years ago. “I didn’t want it to be a grand exit, I just wanted to walk away, so I thanked everybody that I needed to thank, and did just that.”

Still, he could return to cut some promo for WWE, as he had did it last year for the Trump/Vince match. We will definitely look forward to more of these coming up.

Hogan Know Best

February 28, 2008

According to a tabloid report, Hulk Hogan, who is divorcing Linda Bollea after nearly twenty-five years of marriage, cheated on his wife with a female friend of his teen daughter Brooke.

Thirty-three year old Christiane Plante, who worked with nineteen year old Brooke on her 2006 LP, has confessed to her affair with the fifty-four year old dad of her friend in a snitching report with The National Enquirer.

Christine claims the affair took place in 2007 while the family was shooting their VH1 reality show Hogan Knows Best:

“My relationship with Terry began at a time when Terry and Linda privately knew their marriage was ending. She had left him already, although no official papers had been filed. Terry is a good man, good father and a good friend, and he and I grew close at a time when he was going through a very difficult period. It seemed right then, but I know it was wrong. Having felt the guilt and pain build up, I gave a note to Brooke apologizing for my actions. I will never be able to fully forgive myself for this. I have lost an amazing friend.”

Wrestlemania 4.0

February 27, 2008

Well in case you missed Wrestlemania earlier promotional video, you can find it here.

Also, Light It Up by Rev Theory have been recently added to this year Wrestlemania’s theme list. You can view it here.

OK, first start! What’s are the new updates for Mania?

Cena/Triple H/Randy Orton match have been hugely overshadowed by Mayweather/Show match. Which i find it personally kind of sad when the MAIN event is supposed to be the one that sells the most. In any case, wrestling fans are getting paranoid over Cena’s role in his new movie. I can strongly assured the fans that Cena role will not affect his match outcome at Mania.

Edge/Undertaker match is evolving something predictable as of late, but I love the reaction of how this feud is turning, especially when Taker is such a favorite.

Chavo/Punk feud is hitting the last phase smoothly. Frankly, I enjoyed their feud, each week.

Mayweather’s 20 million earning from Wrestlemania is getting huge attention from media of all areas. Expect him to appear in external interview shows in weeks to come. Big Show has been announced to be on the Smackdown roster but any brand would still cover this feud since it is the ATTENTION now. Rumors have sparked for Shane Mcmahon to be involved in some ways.

Shawn/Flair have been set. Legend Vs Legend. While many anticipate Ric Flair to lose, writers might hold Ric for a while longer. Now, that’s the killer. In any case, both of them squared off sometimes back in 2003/4’s Bad Blood PPV. Re-doing this match and hyping it to this extent is a bit blunt. Shawn is also expect to induct Ric Flair into the Hall Of Fame this year.

Y2J/JBL storyline have been canceled. It is said that Vince is behind this sudden change. He doesn’t like the way things are turning, especially the fans reaction to this tasteless grudge. Writers fault seriously.

As mentioned earlier, I knew Finlay is up to some secrecy. Now that they announced Finlay to be Hornswoggle’s dad. Things are definitely getting better. I am still trying to make sense over JBL/Vince vs. Hornswoggle/Finlay. It looks like a forcefully mixed dish to me. In any case, Hornswoggle/Mcmahon angle will set to end after Wrestlemania.

Poor Jericho. His return seems to be going down hill months after months. Now he is involved with Jeff/Shelton/Kennedy in the MITB.

Candice Michelle/Maria and The Glamazon & Melina. Typical of WWE to do at Wrestlemania but I am still looking forward to it. Puppies! (Jerry The King Lawler voice suddenly sounded in my head. Lol!)

Batista is said to be feuding with Umaga on the RAW Vs Smackdown angle.

There might be a huge tag team brawl involving Morrison/Miz, Jimmy/Shannon, Mark Henry/Daddy V, Curt Hawkins/Zack Ryder at Wrestlemania.

There are news leaked backstage that Matt Hardy is set to return this week on Smackdown. No words have been confirmed. If he do return, MVP is surely on his top list of rivalry.

Hogan/Austin name have not been added to this year Wrestlemania.

However, The Rock and Mick Foley might make an appearance. Speaking of The Rock, he would induct his grandfather and father at this year Hall Of Fame.

SHUT UR MOUTH CENA

February 27, 2008

In an interview with the UK Sun, John Cena talked about the Rock and his career choice. John Cena praises the Rock as a person, but he doesn’t like how the Rock hasn’t come back to wrestling.

John Cena talks about wanting to be a wrestler for his entire life. He talks about how the Rock basically fell into the business (probably because of his family ties). He says he doesn’t have a problem with the Rock becoming an actor (he’s doing the same thing). However, he doesn’t like how the Rock doesn’t come back to reward his loyal fan base.

Got to give John Cena credit for daring to say this. A lot of wrestlers feel the same way. However, most wrestlers are smart enough not to cross that line. It’s even more amazing that John Cena would say this knowing that the Rock is one of the beloved performers ever while he’s one of the most despised (fairly or unfairly) wrestlers ever.

The two are expected to cross paths later on this year during Wrestlemania weekend. It’ll be interesting to see how the Rock reacts.

Well many applaud Cena’s frankness, I do see these words coming back to him in later years. We shall see.

Wrestlemania 24 Press Conference

February 26, 2008

LOS ANGELES – Earlier today at the WrestleMania XXIV press conference, the trail to the year’s biggest sports-entertainment spectacle heated up weeks before WWE dips south to Orlando, Fl, for the Granddaddy of Them All.

Rey Mysterio greeted and thanked our fans for their support and attendance. Though precluded from competition due to injury for the second straight WrestleMania, Mysterio promised that his torn right bicep would not keep him from coming back better than ever. The masked Superstar also vowed to help “Pretty Boy” Mayweather in preparing for his battle with the “World’s Largest Athlete.”

Out came “The Money” Mayweather. The “undisputed, undefeated” boxing champion told the world that he would take down Big Show – a man three times his size – on the Grandest Stage of Them All. Mayweather then cast wads of cold, hard cash to the Los Angelinos in attendance, explaining that he runs the show.

His BIG opponent then made his way to the stage moments later, sharing his own comments before tossing around furniture and taunting Mayweather. A fiery staredown between the two (with Mayweather standing on a table to meet Show at eye level) ended just before they came to blows when the WBC Welterweight Champion coolly – and rudely – disregarded the 7-footer’s bellows.

The press conference then took a turn toward the sexier side of WWE, as Divas Candice Michelle and Maria spiced things up in Hollywood this afternoon. In celebration of Maria posing in Playboy magazine, the pair of the Sexiest Women on Television announced their participation at WrestleMania: The first-ever Playboy BunnyMania Match.

Also, the daunting task of facing Undertaker and his 15-0 streak at WrestleMania, World Heavyweight Champion Edge snickered at the podium and asserted his bravado. Boasting that he would find a way past The Phenom to retain the title, the champion promised that “the streak comes to an end finally at the hands of the Rated-R Superstar.” The Deadman however did not appeared.

While reputations, grudge or streak are at stake, the WWE’s gold will also, of course, be on the line at WrestleMania XXIV.

At the press conference, WWE Champion Randy Orton claimed he would emerge from the Citrus Bowl with his title carefully couched in his arms, as the Legend Killer would also kill the hopes of his Raw challengers.

One of Orton’s two opponents, John Cena, intensely described his excitement for an event he was originally slated to miss due to a pectoral injury. In a Triple Threat encounter for the WWE Championship held by the Superstar who injured him, the title-focused Chain Gang Leader offered his own prophecy for March 30.

“My promise and my prediction,” Cena said, “is that history will be made at WrestleMania XXIV.”

In addition to the comments of both the WWE Champion and Cena, 11-time World Champion Triple H offered his emotion-fueled perspective on the Granddaddy of Them All.

“Last year, I was forced to sit on the sidelines,” Triple H explained. “That ate a hole in me. This year, The Game is back.”

Guaranteeing a show that no one else in the universe can put on, the King of Kings said the world will witness his return to his golden throne.

“We will find that soon enough LIVE, in 33 days time!” proclaimed Shane Mcmahon.

Here are some videos (John Cena’s appearance) (Mayweather/Big Show), you guys can enjoy from the press conference.

Off The MainStream: 4th

February 26, 2008

Gorgeous Smackdown’s Diva, Victoria have recently ventured into custom car making. At a tender age, she’s has been avid about driving and cars. She has recently made this announcement on her blog, which have been updated here at WrestlingMAT

It must be nice to be able to sit at home, receive hefty WWE paycheck without doing anything – and that’s what Bobby Lashley is getting now. As part of the agreement on his release, WWE has agreed to pay Bobby Lashley his full contract until the end of May. In exchange, Bobby Lashley will not be allowed to jump to TNA during this period of time.

Well apparently, when you type in “Steroids” on Google.com, a photo of Batista is the first thing that show up. Ahem.

The Great Khali’s translator/manager, Ranjin Singh, is going to be off television for some time. Singh sustained a fractured patella after he was kicked from the entrance of the Elimination Chamber to the ground by Undertaker at No Way Out, this past Sunday. No word have been confirmed whether his character will be written off the storylines.

WWE’s internet marketing department have been rather aggressive lately. WWE now has official accounts on YouTube, Flickr and Facebook. You can see their YouTube page here, Flickr here and Facebook here. They’re branding their pages as the “WWE Fan Nation.” Quite a good move to engage the fans around the world.

Marty Jannetty was among the many wrestling names at the recent WrestleSlam UK convention. Jannetty stated to the press that nowadays people in WWE are being brought up way too soon and put into positions they’re not ready for. Jannetty used Mr Kennedy as an example. Furthermore, Jannetty stated that Shawn Michaels backs up his claim on Kennedy whenever the two talk. Kennedy is also rather unpopular among most of the senior wrestlers.

MVP’s reign as the United States Champion have recently crossed 282 days mark. This segment him as one of the 5 longest reigning U.S Champion, beating notable names such as Ric Flair, Chris Benoit, Sting and Stone Cold. By far, he is the longest reigning US champion of his generation. *Applaud*

Right now the news are hot with Divas on WWE/Playboy. A while back, “CW11 News” in New York City did a segment where they interviewed 3 Hooters girls who had previously posed for Playboy. One of the girls, Beverly Mullins, mentioned that she will be heading to WWE. You can view the video segment here. Mullins is not the only Playboy model under a WWE developmental contract right now, former Diva Search contestant and Playboy model, Taryn Terrell is also in. I’ve updated her blog here at WrestlingMAT

John Cena In “12 Rounds”

February 25, 2008

World Wrestling Entertainment is currently into another film production with Fox Atomic on “12 Rounds”, tapping Renny Harlin to direct and it sets star grappler John Cena, Steve Harris, Aidan Gillen and Brian White. The story centers on a New Orleans police detective (Cena) whose girlfriend is kidnapped. Harlin will direct the $20 million pic from a script by Daniel Kunka. This film is set only for digital video release.

Quite a weak story plot unless of course, evil crime lord explains why. This film is set to release sometime in September this year.

As of now, the concerns are build mainly on many things. With Cena involvement in the entertainment field, one would question, “Would Cena walked out the champ at Wrestlemania?” If not, “Would Triple H bootlicking tactics work and make him the twelve time champ?”

More importantly, this hype of this match is not build on mere anticipation of grudges, championship or feud. The main issue yet to be settled is what happens after this triple threat match.

The Rock At 80th Academy Award

February 25, 2008

WrestlingMAT has learned that the Rock was at the Academy Awards early this morning.

The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) presented the award for Best Visual Effects. He made a joke about the scene from Raiders of the Lost Arc. The nominees were Transformer and Pirates of the Carribean. The Golden Compass ended up winning.

It was really interesting to see The Rock on screen again. For more pictures of the Rock, you can view it here.

Column Of The Week: The Wrestlemania Moments

February 24, 2008

Wrestlemania is the grand daddy of wrestling not just in WWE. This is not an overstatement to glorify the event but more importantly of what it stands. In 5 weeks time, Wrestlemania will reach its 24th birthday (that’s even older than me) and it would be held at Florida. Over the years, we seen history, be a part of it and more so, shaped the way how Wrestlemania is today. Now, let’s us look at the ten moments of the 24 years luxurious legacy of Wrestlemania.

1/ Several celebrities such as Aretha Franklin, Reba McEntire and Boyz II Men have sung “America the Beautiful” over the years at WrestleMania, but perhaps no rendition was more memorable than that of the late, great Ray Charles. Charles certainly set the tone for what turned out to be a spectacular night at WrestleMania II, a night that set the success of wrestling in America.

2/ Wrestlemania III of Hogan defending his WWE Championship against the undefeated Andre the Giant was arguably one of the most anticipated match in sports-entertainment history. The Eighth Wonder of the World vs the Pride Of American. Hogan miraculously lifted Andre in the air and slammed him down to the canvas in one of the most memorable moments in WWE history.

3/ The first Intercontinental and WWE Championship match was put into a main event match at WrestleMania VI between Hogan and Ultimate Warrior. Two brothers dubbed the Ultimate Challenge, and it certainly lived up to its billing. After missing his patented leg drop, Hogan was taken down by the Warrior after a big splash. Instead of being a sore loser following the defeat, Hogan grabbed what used to be his WWE Championship and gave it to Ultimate Warrior before embracing him in a true act of good sportsmanship.

4/ WrestleMania X will go down as one of the best WrestleManias in history, because of the first-ever Ladder Match between Shawn Michaels and Razor. There were several memorable moments during the match, but perhaps the most memorable was Michaels leaping off the top of ladder and landing a splash on Ramon. Ramon may have ended up winning the match, but Michaels soaring off the ladder is a visual that will be etched in the minds of WWE fans forever.

5/ Recorded as one of the worse “bloodbath” matches, the Stone Cold versus Bret Hart match at Wrestlemania 13 definitely set the tone as one of the most memorable moment. After a brutal match that saw Stone Cold badly busted open, Hart locked in the Sharpshooter. Stone Cold could not escape Hart’s clutches, but he refused to give up. Stone Cold eventually passed out from the pain, and although he lost, he left the ring to a standing ovation as the fans chanted his name.

6/ “Iron” Mike Tyson, the self proclaimed baddest man on the planet served as a guest referee of an epic battle between Shawn Michaels and Stone Cold for the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania 15. Tyson initially aligned himself with Michaels and D-Generation X, but in the end, he turned on Michaels and counted 1-2-3 for Stone Cold marking the start of the Austin Era.

7/ At WrestleMania X-Seven, Stone Cold Steve Austin challenged The Rock for the WWE Championship. It was The Rattlesnake versus the Brahma Bull. The Hell-Raising versus The Electrifying. The stakes couldn’t get higher than this one. Two top faces in the business go at it one on one. In the end, Stone Cold enlisted the help of Mr. McMahon to defeat his nemesis and regain the WWE Championship. Everyone stood in mere shock when Austin shook Vince’s hand after his victory.

8/ After a long hiatus from WWE, Hogan returned with the nWo to wreak havoc. The Rock challenged him to an Icon vs. Icon Match at WrestleMania X8, and Hogan accepted. It’s not easy for a WWE Superstar to reach an iconic status. It’s even more rare that two icons meet in the same ring to go one on one, but that was exactly the case at WrestleMania X8. In one of those rare moments that transcends the event itself, the two Icons met in the middle of the ring, face to face, for the first time. The Toronto crowd went nuts cheering back and fore for both men. It concluded with a handshake between both men.

9/ At Wrestlemania XX, the crowd of Madison Square Garden were heart-warmed in sight to see both men, who worked so hard in this business, finally achieving the impossible, and that’s Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero. Following Benoit’s Triple Threat win over Triple H and Shawn Michaels, he celebrated in the ring with his best friend and WWE Champion Eddie Guerrero as they teared and hugged each other as the capacity crowd filled the arena with applauds.

10/ Perhaps the most heavily advertised match ever in the world of wrestling and that’s two billionaire going one on one at Wrestlemania 23. The Trump Vs Mcmahon match generated huge publicity from the media and eventually, Vince got his head shaved bald as Bobby Lashley, Donald Trump and Stone Cold stood hand in hand.

As we stood back and appreciate what has been done, Wrestlemania 24 will invades the Citrus Bowl, FL in 5 weeks time. Till then, see ya!
