Superstar Lookback: Kerry Von Erich

The Von Erich family is a legendary professional wrestling family. Their actual birth names are “Adkisson”, but every member of the family that went into the wrestling business used the ring name “Von Erich”, after a family wrestler’s patriarch.

The Von Erich name is viewed as a “curse” on the family. While patriarch Fritz lived until his natural death, four of his five wrestling sons died premature deaths within a 10-year span (as well as his eldest son who was electrocuted as a child). David died in 1984 under circumstances that were disputed for years, while Michael, Kerry, and Chris all committed suicide in subsequent years.

Kerry Von Erich’s death was considered one of the worse. Kerry Von Erich is the fourth son of Fritz Von Erich. He was born on February 3, 1960 in Niagara Falls, New York. Known as “The Modern Day Warrior” and “The Texas Tornado,” Kerry was by far the best-known of the Von Erich Family.

He spent 9 years in NWA (WCW) and wrestled many great talents which escalated his fame including, Ric Flair & Jerry “The King” Lawler. Subsequently, Kerry was involved in a motorcycle accident that nearly ended his life and left him with a dislocated hip and a badly injured right leg. Doctors eventually had to amputate his right foot. Kerry was able to keep his amputation secret for a while. However, during a match on an AWA card in Las Vegas against Colonel DeBeers, Kerry’s secret was exposed. Eventually, he left the company.

He set his foot in the WWE’s ring in the early 90s and wrestled Mr. Perfect, Undertaker, Legion Of Doom, Warlord, Ricky Steamboat, Ultimate Warrior, British Bulldog, Sgt Slaughter. He had good fame here, and a leafy salary.

Unknowingly, he left WWE for ECW. Contemplating over his physical condition and financial issues, it doesn’t seems logical at all. Not long, Kerry committed suicide by a shot to the heart in 1993 on his father’s ranch.

Many shifted the cause of his death due to drug abuse. Well others, who are more superstitious blamed it on the curse. His beautiful daughter, Lacey Von Erich has signed a development contract to WWE in 2007. However, she was released not long ago due to the lack of commitment. The official Von Erich family blog has been updated here at WrestlingMAT.
